With Halloween just around the corner it is time to start thinking about costumes. Some Halloween enthusiasts take pride in making their costume from scratch, and others loath it. They want nothing more than to hit one button online and have it show up at their door. But we’re here to show you that making a Halloween costume can be sustainable, easy, and fun! Not only do Halloween costumes result in excess plastic waste, unsustainable and unethical practices, they are also very expensive. With Halloween turning into Halloweekend for many people, and multiple costumes needed, it can definitely add up. Keep reading to learn some of our favourite tips, tricks, and ideas of sustainable and affordable Halloween costumes.

1. DIY… get crafty

The most sustainable, affordable (and fun) way to do Halloween costumes is it utilize items you already have in your closet. If you look through your closet, your siblings, friends or roommates’ closet, you will without a doubt be able to find enough items to throw a costume together. There are lots of everyday items that can be utilized for a costume. For example, you could be a cowgirl/cowboy, a witch, your favourite character from a movie or TV show, a sports player, etc.

2. Thrift/Consignment/Vintage

Thrift stores have tons of options for costumes that you can either buy, or you can buy individual pieces if you are making a costume. Around Halloween, most thrift stores will have a designated section with full costumes you can buy. This is easy and affordable because they are usually over half the price as what you would pay if you bought it new. And it’s sustainable! What more could you ask for! If you are DIY’ing a costume and making it yourself, thrift stores, consignment stores or vintage stores are the best place to start your search for items. They will have both basics and unique items that you can incorporate into your costume.

3. Borrow/Swap with a friend

With Halloween being a holiday that the vast majority of the population celebrates every year, there is no doubt that all of your friends have costumes from past years just laying around. There’s nothing easier, more affordable, or sustainable then borrowing from a friend. You can even use a friends old costume as a base, and add onto it to give it your own special touch.
